George Ellis Johnson Sr. was born in Mississippi a George Ellis Johnson Sr. was born in Mississippi and raised in Chicago, IL. In 1944 Johnson started working for a cosmetics firm as a production chemist and later left the company to found Johnson Products with his wife Joan, which focused on African American hair products for men. Their first product was Ultra Wave, a hair straightener for men. Shortly after they launched Ultra Sheen, a high quality hair straightener for women.

In the 60’s, when the Afro hairstyle became popular, Afro Sheen was developed. It became the most well known of the Johnson Products. Afro Sheen promoted Black love and unity and also challenged issues of race. This encouraged African Americans to embrace who they were and their natural beauty.

The company continued to grow and went on to have an exclusive partnership with Soul Train receiving national exposure. #blackbeautyhistory
